MAJOR PROJECTS / ARA SAN JUAN SUBMARINE

The half-life repair of a submarine, it is one of the most difficult and complex works in the shipping industry. When the necesity of performing this work to the argentinean navy ARA San Juan Arisen, CINAR created the Submarine´s Management, with the aim of forming a specialized team to carry out the project, and regain the capabilities that the country had lost decades ago.

HALF LIFE REPAIR OF SUBMARINE SAN JUAN

The pitfall of the project streams from the fact that in order to replace the engines and heavy weights, it is imperative to cut the hull in half with oxygen-acetylene and divide it into two parts due to the impedimentof withdrawing, or entering, equipment thorugh the small hatches of the submarine. The cutting process is extremely difficult, and required a preparation of two months of engineering work on the premises of CINAR to carrying it out successfully.

THE PROJECT

The submarine ARA San Juan entered the CINAR on December 19, 2008, and a total 625 works were carried outof which almost 400 were performed in Almirante Storni workshops.

MAIN WORKS

ENGINES AND GENERATORS
4 MTU diesel of 16 cylinders in V and 1,200 kW of power, which move equal amounts of alternators of 4,000 amperes werw replaced. The 4 generators - equipment used for loading the submarine´s batteries - were overhauled and completely repaired.
Additionally, electrical propulsion engine, which spins the propeller, received a comprehensive maintenance.

BATTERIES
960 batteriesthat operate the submarine, valves and other mechanisms were repaired enabling the submarine to reach its original condition.

UNITING THE SUBMARINE
The task of reuniting the submarine, which was held in late 2011, also entailed significant complexities from the technical point of view. No mistake can be made since a small pore on its welding can compromise the life and safety of the ship's crew.
